Excluding snow/ice events, tornado / thunder storm season runs March - September. That's not to say the stray storm won't occur at other times of the year. As you know by now, ice/snow happens now!

There can be severe weather most times of the year. In the north, severe snowstorms occur in the winter, usually starting in December, though they can start in November in higher elevations and in the far north.
The season for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms starts in April in northern Illinois, but peaks in the summer. http://www.livescience.com/environment/050322_tornado_season.html
